The 68-year-old overturned her car in Twickenham on February 22 of this year and was found to have 47 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml when breathalysed. The legal limit for alcohol on the breath is 35 micrograms. Her three-year-old grandson was in the car with her at the time of the accident.

Following a breath test, the actress was taken to the police station in Kingston upon Thames and charged with driving a motor vehicle above the legal limit.

Wimbledon Magistrates' Court heard how she had been celebrating a new fence being installed at her Chiswick home by drinking vodka with her Polish builders . Both her parents came to England from Poland during the second world war.

She had collided with another car and rolled her Kia after becoming distracted by an emergency light on the dashboard. She and her grandson were rescued from the car by passers-by.

She was given a 16 month driving ban and fined

A statement issued on her behalf by her solicitor stated, "The incident of February 22, 2016, will always be engraved in her mind and she cannot express enough her remorse for what happened.

"She is thankful that no-one was injured.

"She looks forward to resuming her professional commitments and putting this matter behind her."

She has made no further comment to the press about the matter.

The Chiswick-based actress, who is passionate about wildlife and conservation issues, wrote her memoir three years ago.

Miss Lenska has had a long successful acting career including appearances in Alfie Darling (1976) Coronation Street, Calendar Girls and Eastenders.

She grew up in England as the daughter of Count Ludwik Maria Lubienski and Countess Elizabeth, who fled Poland for England in 1945.
