Touching In and Front Door Boarding Back on Some Bus Routes |
|
Restrictions introduced on the number of passengers allowed on each bus Revised arrangements have been introduced for travel on London’s buses as of this Saturday (30 May). Passengers are asked to touch in with Oyster or contactless on a number of routes although the only route through Chiswick which is affected is the 267 for which middle door boarding remains in operation. Front door boarding has been introduced on 124 other routes and this is to be extended to all routes by the middle of June. Free travel and middle door boarding was introduced on London’s buses after a high death toll among drivers during the pandemic. Transport for London (TfL) say the return to more normal operation follows extensive research by a multidisciplinary team from University College of London (UCL), and close work between TfL, bus operators and the UNITE union. According to TfL, the UCL analysis finds that the steps that they have taken have substantially reduced the risk to drivers of contracting coronavirus from customers. New limits to the number of customers on board at any one time will be introduced. Double-decker buses with multiple doors will have a capacity of 20 people. Drivers will have the discretion to allow up to 25 passengers, if households are travelling together. Single-decker buses will have a capacity of between 6 and 10 people. Drivers will have the discretion to allow up to 7 or up to 14 passengers if households are travelling together, depending on the size of the bus TfL urge that wherever possible you avoid the busy times, 5.45 – 8.15am and 4.00 – 5.30pm. The current operation timetable of buses through Chiswick is as follows: Route 237 is now running a Monday to Friday service on weekdays with buses running every 8-9 minutes during the day.
