Fire damaged shop to be replaced with new premises
A Chiswick retailer specialising in school uniforms is set for a return after its premises were devastated by fire. Billings and Edmonds has submitted a planning application to Hounslow Council for a new shop front at 112 Chiswick High Road. The shop was destroyed this June and since then the company has continued to trade without access to this site although it has other branches in Eton and Harrow. The new design will see the front entrance door place in the centre of the ground floor which it says will be more in keeping with the other commercial properties in the area and create a safer exit route. Previously the shop shared a hallway entrance with the flat above. A report with the application states that the removal of the previous inset doorway will prevent ‘unfortunate’ homeless people using it as an area to sleep. The business can trace its origins back to the 19th century and has supplied the uniform requirements of not just Eton and Harrow but other schools, including Stowe, Oundle, Rugby, Lancing and Charterhouse. The company has catered to the Royal Family fitting out Princess Margaret and Princess Elizabeth with outfits for their home schooling in the 1930s and providing uniforms for Prince William and Prince Harry when they went to Eton. The Chiswick shop was opened in the early nineties and also caters for prep and pre-prep schools in the area. The planning reference for the application is P/2022/3281.
