Volunteers and tree sponsors came out on Saturday to plant the first 14 trees for the new arboretum in Chiswick Old Burial Ground this Saturday (12 December).

People attended in shifts, following Covid-19 restrictions rules, to do the digging or watch their tree being planted.

The event was organised by Dukes Meadows Trust and led by Tibor Babic, who also chose the trees and locations.

Tibor said, "The burial ground is perfect for planting specimen trees, which need a lot of space so they can grow to their natural shape and be seen in full splendour. It was a lovely task choosing the trees and I was fortunate to have advice from Kew’s arborist, Tony Kirkham, who visited a few months ago. The response from local people has been fantastic in sponsoring trees, volunteering time to help plant them and offering to help water and look after them next summer.

"I am grateful to Fr Simon Brandes, Vicar of St Nicholas Church, Rob Donnelly and Dave Horgan from Greenspace 360 and Graham Clifton from Old Chiswick Protection Society (OCPS) for their support to make the project possible. Either as individuals or as a group many of the trees were donated by parishioners and members of OCPS after Fr Simon and Graham spent considerable time promoting the project, which the church and OCPS are very committed to. "

The arboretum will be planted over the next few years and will consist of more specimen trees and complimentary shrubs and bulbs. There is also interest in making the burial ground more biodiverse to support insects, butterflies and birds.

There are more trees available to sponsor next year although a waiting list is already building, and people are invited to sponsor a tree or get involved in planting up and looking after the trees and plants.
