A group of protestors have climbed on top of an Eddie Stobart oil tanker requiring police to partly close Chiswick Roundabout this Thursday morning (14 April).

This has led to significant disruption in the area with traffic jams widespread across west London with vehicles at a standstill over Kew Bridge, the North Circular with queues back to Junction 2 on the M4.

The northside of the roundabout was closed with traffic being directed back onto the A4 westbound.

Around midday a crane was brought to the site to remove the four protestors on top of the vehicle which they are understood to have glued themselves to. They were removed and arrested.

The group are believed to be associated with Extinction Rebellion who have organised a series of disruptions at oil depots across the country include the one in Bedfont.

The Just Stop Oil campaign is demanding that the government stops any new oil and gas projects in the UK and is attempting to reduce the availability of fuel at petrol pumps.

The government has recently suggested that new domestic sources of fossil fuels could be found as an alternative to buying from Russia. It argues that the money being spent in this way goes directly to fund Russia’s war on the people of Ukraine.

Police across the UK have warned that these protests, which have been taking place for two weeks, are exceptionally dangerous for the protestors themselves and staff working at oil depots and transporting oil.

The group said earlier in a statement, “The plan is simple: We will continue to cause disruption until the government agrees to do what the IPCC, the International Energy Agency, the United Nations, its own Committee on Climate Change, and scientists everywhere are saying we absolutely must do now: to end all new fossil fuel investments immediately. “

Chiswick Roundabout has now fully reopened.
