The road was closed off for some time to traffic

A driver was injured when his car crashed near the mini roundabout at the junction of Wellesley Road and Sutton Lane North today.

Customers in the Rhythm & Brew cafe heard a loud crash at around 1pm as the car apparently came around the corner from the Wellesley Road direction.

One report said the car appeared to veer out of control coming round the corner, and mount the pavement at Walpole Gardens, colliding with a lamp post.

The corner is a busy junction with a mini roundabout onto Sutton Lane north.

The scene of the accident

Two Fire Brigade units attended the scene along with a unit of London Ambulance to assist the male driver, who was described as "elderly". He was brought to hospital after being taken from the car.

Sutton Lane North was closed off in both directions to traffic, and traffic officers were posted at nearby locations to direct cars towards the High Road.

Traffic was flowing along Sutton Lane north again in both directions at around 3pm.
