Volunteers save fruit from waste
Abundance volunteers throughout Chiswick saved almost 1,500 kgs of fruit that would have been thrown away and turned it into edible delights at the weekend. Local MP Mary Macleod joined in the fun by taking her turn on a bike-powered smoothie machine at the event at St. Michael and All Angels. A number of traditional apple-presses were also used to turn the glut of apples collected over the past week into delicious juice which was then sold.
Pictures: Des McConkey Stalls from local schools also sold tarts and pies, and Sam's Brasserie chef, Ian, along with owner Sam Harrison, sold pumpkin risotto and sausages. Local honey was also available to purchase and children enjoyed apple-bobbing and toffee-apples. The event was organised to educate people on how to use surplus fruit from gardens which would otherwise go to waste. October 3rd, 2011 |
