Structure disappears on online mapping service
Regular readers of ChiswickW4.com will know that Chiswick Bridge remained opened this weekend after being closed the previous two weeks. Anybody checking elsewhere online may have received a bit of a surprise as the bridge has completely disappeared from Google Maps.
As well the structure no longer being visible anyone seeking directions using the company’s service would be told to make a substantial detour should they wish to get from Chiswick to Barnes. The problem is believed to have resulted from the entry of faulty information into their system concerning the refurbishment of the bridge. There were still some lane restrictions for vehicles this weekend but the bridge remained open to traffic. Anyone following the diversions recommended by the site may have found themselves travelling over Kew Bridge at a time when it was affected by heavy traffic due to the international at Twickenham. At the time of writing the error remains on the site despite many people pointing it out to Google. Recent closures caused heavy traffic congestion along Hartington Road and Thames Road as traffic was diverted along Strand on the Green from Kew Bridge.
Chiswick Bridge Has Gone! Diversions would have required longer journeys for motorists Following the weekend closures, TfL says it is on track to have the work to strengthen and refurbish the 80-year old structure completed and all footpaths re-opened in time for the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race on Saturday April 11th, 2015. The entire project is to be delivered by May 2015.
