Chiswick councillor Robert Oulds, who is chairman of the Eurosceptic Bruges Group which campaigned to leave the European Union, said today that he was delighted the result of the referendum and he had been working fifteen years for this day.

Cllr Oulds who spoke in favour of the Leave campaign at two debates in Chiswick in the run-up to the referendum said that he hoped the people of Chiswick would unite, whether they voted to Stay or to Leave, because that was what was important as we moved into the new era.

He told chiswickw4.com that the result proved that despite the scare-mongering and criticism of people for being Eurosceptic and questioning the EU, the result showed true democracy.

Those people who were worried about the future should be optimistic and hopeful. We could still keep trading with countries, not just in Europe but beyond. We could be in charge of our destiny and make our own choices. He said the Bruges Group, which was formed in 1989 following a speech by Margaret Thatcher, had received messages of support from other countries including Denmark, Italy and Greece from people inspired by the British example.

The Bruges Group would be keeping a close eye on the negotiations that would take place over the next two years, to ensure that the British people got a fair deal and that the post EU relationship was mutually advantageous.

He added that Prime Minister David Cameron's speech was "very moving" and he had generously praised the Leave campaign. He was choosing the right time-scale to step down.

" We have a vision of how things should be, we are not just against the EU but we are in favour of a different model, one of intergovernmentalism, of not being told what to do by institutions we haven't elected and that are outside of national democracy."
