Serenade to Summer reflects on the season in both town and country The Addison Oratorio and Chamber Choirs in concert
July 2, 2023 Addison Singers’ two classical choirs will be participating in a concert this month billed as Serenade to Summer. It is taking place at 7.30pm on 8 July at St Peter’s Church on Southfield Road ((W4 1BB). It will be the Addison Singers second performance of the year and a feast of music reflecting on the summer season both in the town and country is promised. The Chamber Choir will present two short choral cycles both of which reflect on the rose and its wider symbolism. These will be Mealor’s Now sleeps the Crimson Petal and Les Chansons des Roses by Morten Lauridsen. The Oratorio Choir will present a wide-ranging tour of pastoral and urban scenes in Bob Chilcott’s Songs and Cries of London Town and Cecilia McDowall’s light-hearted A Fancy of Folksongs. The choir will also perform Vaughan Williams famous Serenade to Music which will feature soloists from within the choir and showcase its rich tutti choral sound. Matthew Hough will perform Chopin’s Nocturne in C minor (Op. 48, No. 1) and Poulenc’s Nocturne (No. 4 Bal fantôme). There may be one or two other surprises in the programme too. The event is sponsored by local estate agents Horton and Garton. Tickets are £18 plus booking fee or £3 for under 16s. New members are always welcome to join the Addison Group of Singers, which is made up of three different singing classes and four different choirs for singers of all ages, abilities and musical interests. It was founded more than 30 years ago with David Wordsworth as its Musical Director since 1995. Matthew Thomas Morgan - newly appointed Music Director, Classical – took up his post at the beginning of 2023 to conduct the Chamber Choir and Oratorio Choir. The Addison Singers comprises two classical choirs – an auditioned Chamber Choir and larger non-auditioned Oratorio Choir; and two jazz choirs – an auditioned Jazz Ensemble and a larger non-auditioned all-female Jazz Choir. It also offers three different singing classes to meet the needs of beginners, intermediate and the more competent, experienced singer.
